LOCAL DANCE COMPANY HONORED

The Adam Miller Dance Project receives rare invitation by the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City to prepare for upcoming performances at Wadsworth Atheneum.

In anticipation of the Adam Miller Dance Project’s June 1 and 2 performances at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, The Baryshnikov Arts Center has offered the dance company the rare and prestigious opportunity to use its new facility for rehearsals in New York City.

The creation of the new facility was spear-headed by world famous dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, whose career spanned such diverse highlights as a Kennedy Center Honor to a featured role on the popular television show “Sex in the City”. Opened only last month to great public fanfare, The Baryshnikov Arts Center is a state-of-the-art rehearsal and performance space. Baryshnikov developed the center as a laboratory for artists to create new work and as a vibrant hub for the arts community. He envisioned a place where artists from many disciplines and backgrounds can interact and develop their visions. The building, in midtown Manhattan, has six floors with three Off-Broadway theaters on the first three floors and spacious rehearsal studios on the top floors. The center also houses the offices of the Baryshnikov Foundation.

The Adam Miller Dance Project is a Hartford-based professional ballet company now in its fifth year of revitalizing the local dance performance scene, presenting contemporary, sophisticated ballet with a modern edge. Miller, a long-time Hartford resident and former dancer with the Hartford Ballet, works with local dancers as well as a core group of professionals based in the New York City area.

“I can’t tell you how exciting it is to receive this invitation. I toured the facility, and you get the sense of being at the heart of a breeding ground for top-notch performance arts. When I got the news of our invitation, I was deeply humbled. I know how many artists would love to work there, and our dance company is honored to be one of the first groups selected to use the Baryshnikov Arts Center,” said company director, Adam Miller.

The dance company begins rehearsals in March for performances June 1 and June 2 at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. The Adam Miller Dance Project will present a new work by Miller, dances by other rising choreographers, and a work by Connecticut’s celebrated Pilobolus dance company.
