Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art Welcomes Return of Adam Miller Dance Project

The Adam Miller Dance Project presents Room to Move at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art’s Aetna Theater on Thursday, June 5 and Friday, June 6. The Hartford-based professional contemporary ballet company will perform a program that includes a classic work choreographed by Pilobolus for the Hartford Ballet, as well as two original world premieres. The company’s director, Adam Miller, will create a large-scale work for the company, and Miller has commissioned a new work by emerging choreographer Cassandra Malizia.

This season features the return of an audience favorite by Pilobolus, the duet from Land’s Edge. Land’s Edge was created for the Hartford Ballet and is now a part of Pilobolus’ own repertory. “The piece has become a modern classic of American dance, a great gift from Pilobolus to Hartford dance audiences,” states Miller. “To have permission to recreate it is really an honor and a validation of the professional level of our work.” Appearing in the duet is Gianna Russillo, a member of the Broadway cast of Phantom of the Opera.

Through a grant from the Greater Hartford Arts Council, the Adam Miller Dance Project has commissioned a new work by Cassandra Malizia, a recent graduate of the University of Hartford’s Hartt School college of performing arts. “Part of our mission is to bring along emerging artists. When I saw Cassandra’s work, I was blown away,” says Miller. “Making art is taking chances, so I’m excited to see her choreography produced on professional dancers. It helps our company to continue our strong ties to Hartford’s dance legacy.”

Rounding out the repertory this year are two works by Miller. In the Dark, a hard-edged and witty tribute to Frederico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita, and the duet from Miller’s major work, Kitty, incorporating a sophisticated integration of sound design and video to create a romantic and wistful interlude.

Mr. Miller, company director and former principal dancer with the Hartford Ballet, established AMDP seven years ago. In that time it has carved out a unique place for itself in Hartford and the Northeast, creating a reputation for high quality performance of entertaining contemporary ballet by dancers with strong professional credentials. Stemming from a showcase performance in January at the prestigious Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City, the company was invited to appear later in June at New Haven’s International Festival of Arts and Ideas, and at the historic Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. The company’s season also includes performances at top-tier dance festivals in Westchester and Syracuse, New York and at the Provincetown Dance Festival in Rhode Island.

Members of the dance company come together yearly in Hartford to prepare for its season. Among the dancers are Allison Jay, a former member of the national tour of Movin’ Out and Justin Peck, also from Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. Jennifer Chicheportiche and Tsara Bequette have been on tour with the renowned modern dance company Momix. Three young artists, all graduates of the Hartt School’s Dance Division, will join the Adam Miller Dance Project this season.
