A new arts adventure comes of age.

The professional dance group, the Adam Miller Dance Project, will celebrate its fifth season in Hartford with performances at the Wadsworth Atheneum

June 1 and 2, 2006.

Since its inception in 2001, the group has grown from a collection of committed dancers and choreographers looking for performance opportunity, to an established arts organization that is part of the fabric of Hartford’s cultural community. After the demise of both Hartford Ballet and Dance Connecticut, Adam Miller, along with other former artists of those two companies, pledged to keep leading edge, professional dance a part of the city’s artistic landscape. Miller, who served as Associate Artistic Director at Dance Connecticut, comments, “When the Project started, I had no way of knowing that it would blossom into what it is today, Hartford’s own unique dance performance group. We’re here to stay, bringing the city a fresh, professional, high quality artistic experience.”

Since then, the Adam Miller Dance Project, founded and directed by Mr. Miller, has presented four repertory seasons in Hartford, staging some twenty dance works of which eleven were world premieres. Last year, the project revived the duet from Lands Edge, a classic favorite created for the Hartford Ballet by the world-renowned modern dance troupe, Pilobolus. The new company has now ventured successfully beyond Hartford, with engagements in Syracuse, Yonkers, Providence and New York City at the prestigious Joyce SOHO performance space. Last October, the Adam Miller Dance Project participated in the first annual Provincetown Dance Festival, in Provincetown, MA.. Plans are under discussion for the group to perform again in New York City at the new dance space created by Mikhail Baryshnikov.

In June, Adam Miller will present a program of new and recent works at the Wadsworth Atheneum. Although this is the first full season at this venue, it is not the first time the group has performed there. In 2004 and 2005, they were featured on the Wadsworth's stage as part of First Night Hartford, the annual city-wide New Years Eve celebration. These performances, and their enormous success, led Mr. Miller to seek out the museum’s support in performing there for the project’s next spring season.

Miller is committed to experimental dance works that explore new directions for the ballet tradition. He has incorporated themes of Italian 60’s and Western movies, detective fiction and other offbeat themes into his dances. Musical choices for the work has ranged from Elvis Costello to W.A. Mozart. “Coming to the Wadsworth a big step. I don’t know how many people are aware that its stage where George Balanchine’s work was first seen in America. So it’s an honor to be a part of the Wadsworth’s great dance legacy and we feel more than ready!” says Miller.

Miller is also pleased to announce that his company will a beneficiary of a New Creation grant awarded to the Wadsworth by the Edward C. and Ann T. Roberts Foundation. Together with Katie Stevinson, Director of Full Force Dance Theatre, he will mount a new work inspired by the Surrealist and Dada schools of painting.

Of this collaboration Miller states, “This promises to be a big event, one that celebrates multiple aspects of the visual artistic experience. The support from the Wadsworth and the Roberts Foundation for this unique project validates AMDP's emerging profile within the Hartford arts community. I think it’s fantastic that Hartford audiences will have the opportunity to experience the originality of this original alliance. Katie Stevinson and I are enormously grateful to all those who have supported us.” The Adam Miller Dance Project is particularly indebted to The Edward C. and Ann T. Roberts Foundation and to the Greater Hartford Arts Council for their underwriting of new work and of the upcoming June season respectively.
