Hartford-based Adam Miller Dance Project, returns to the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art June 7 and 8, continuing the Atheneum’s historic legacy of dance in the Aetna Theater. Directed by Adam Miller, a former principal dancer with the Hartford Ballet, the company brings together professional dancers in a repertory that combines the grace of traditional ballet with the excitement of contemporary modern dance. Over the past six years, the group has performed extensively in the Hartford area as well as throughout the northeast.
Mr. Miller's six-year-old company of 10 classically trained, professional dancers presents new and recent works. Miller expands the boundaries of audience expectations for dance while celebrating familiar dance idioms. The group's repertory has been described as "surprising," "witty,” "sexy,” and “fun.” In addition to regular performances in Hartford, the group has toured around the northeast and has been featured at the Joyce SoHo in New York City, the Provincetown Dance Festival on Cape Cod, and the Untermeyer Summer Festival.
Mr. Miller was recently awarded an artistic fellowship for choreography from the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism, one of only three awarded statewide. “For me the award represents an artistic validation of the work,” says Miller. “It’s gratifying to have the merit of the dances recognized in such a competitive environment. I can’t over state how important the Commission’s support is to keeping professional quality, leading-edge dance available to the Connecticut audience.” Last year, the Adam Miller Dance Project was among the first dance groups invited to rehearse in the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York, the prestigious facility recently opened by famed dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov.
Miller remains dedicated to crafting dances for the greater Hartford audience. Working with professional-level, classically-trained dancers, he expands the boundaries of what is typically considered ballet dance. “It’s humbling to perform on the same stage that first welcomed George Balanchine when he came to America,” Miller notes. “Not too many people know the part that Hartford played in nurturing ballet and this amazing choreographer, a true historic figure in the arts.”
The bill at this year’s Atheneum performances includes an audience favorite, “Great Divide,” a witty and eclectic tribute to the American west and movie westerns. “Ginza Court,” a sensual and athletic piece that was a hit with last year’s audience, will also be reprised. With the support of the fellowship award, a world premiere, “Kitty,” will be presented. Miller describes it as “a contemporary take on romanticism and the supernatural.”
